Biography

Lawrence Wesley Willis, known professionally as Wesley Willis, was born on May 31, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois. He was an American musician and visual artist who began his career as a visual artist before transitioning to music after being diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1989. His musical style blended punk rock and outsider music traditions, characterized by partially spoken lyrics and auto-accompaniment keyboard backing. Willis gained underground fame in the 1990s, particularly after the release of his Greatest Hits album on Alternative Tentacles in 1995, compiled by Jello Biafra. Notable songs include "Rock N Roll McDonald's" and a series of tracks where he directly insulted his demons. He fronted the punk rock band Wesley Willis Fiasco during the 1990s and collaborated with various artists. American Recordings signed him as a solo musician in 1995, leading to numerous solo albums and frequent tours. Willis died on August 21, 2003, due to complications from chronic myelogenous leukemia. He has been recognized for his influence on various media, including the song "Whip the Llama's Ass", inspiring Nullsoft's slogan for Winamp.
