Biography

John McCrea is the lead vocalist and guitarist of the American alt‑rock band CAKE, formed in Sacramento, California, in August 1991. After recruiting trumpeter Vincent DiFiore and guitarist Greg Brown, the group released the independent debut Motorcade of Generosity in 1994, which gained attention on the college circuit and led to a contract with Capricorn Records. The single "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle" entered the Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1995, and the follow‑up Fashion Nugget (1996) achieved platinum status, propelled by the hit "The Distance" that peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Prolonging the Magic (1998) continued the band’s success with the chart‑topping single "Never There", while Comfort Eagle (2001) reached number 17 on the Billboard 200 and produced the top‑ten single "Short Skirt/Long Jacket". After a 2004 release of Pressure Chief and a compilation B‑Sides and Rarities (2007), CAKE issued Showroom of Compassion (2011), debuting at Number 1 on the Billboard 200. The band has toured extensively, including the Unlimited Sunshine Tour, and has maintained a presence through occasional singles such as "Sinking Ship" (2018). On February 5, 2026, the former guitarist Greg Brown, member from 1991 to 1997, died at the age of 56.
