Biography

Alison Statton, born 1982 in England, founded the alternative rock group Weekend after the dissolution of Young Marble Giants in 1981. The band emerged from a collaboration between Alison Statton and Spike of Reptile Ranch, later joined by Simon Emmerson, and signed with Rough Trade Records in December 1981. Their debut single, "The View From Her Room" / "Leaves of Spring", appeared in 1982. The breakthrough came with the studio album La Varieté, released in 1982. In 1983 the group issued the live album Live at Ronnie Scott's, and in 1984 the compilation Nipped in the Bud included tracks from Young Marble Giants and The Gist. After disbanding in 1983, former members Simon Booth and Larry Stabbins formed the jazz‑oriented group Working Week. Weekend’s influence extended to acts such as Saint Etienne, The Sundays, and Belle and Sebastian, and the band’s catalog continues to be available on vinyl through labels such as Rough Trade and Vinyl Japan.
