Biography

Beat Happening was an American indie pop band formed in 1982 in Olympia, Washington. The group consisted of Calvin Johnson on guitar and vocals, Heather Lewis on drums, guitar, and vocals, and Bret Lunsford on guitar and drums. The members began recording in 1983 after meeting at the Evergreen State College. Their first release was the five-song EP Three Tea Breakfast, recorded in Tokyo in 1984. Their self-titled debut studio album, Beat Happening, was released in 1985 to critical acclaim. Subsequent albums include Jamboree (1988), Black Candy (1989), and Dreamy (1991), which solidified the band's position in the indie pop movement. In 1992, they released You Turn Me On, their final studio album. The group's influence extended to various acts, including early riot grrrl bands and Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. Although the band never officially disbanded, they became inactive in 1992, and the members have not performed together in public since that era.
