Biography

Wakin Chau – born Huajian Zhou on December 22, 1960, in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong – is a Mandopop and Cantopop singer who has released over 40 albums in several languages including Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. He began his musical journey when he learned to play guitar at the age of 13. In 1979, he relocated to Taipei to attend National Taiwan University, where he majored in mathematics. While attending college, he began performing folk music at local coffee shops. He was unable to land a record label deal as an artist, so he started writing songs for other artists and singing jingles for commercials. One of the owners of Rock Records, where Huajian Zhou was employed as an assistant producer, recognized his voice and had him record his first Mandarin album, Direction of the Heart (1987). He continued to release hit albums under his birth name of Huajian Zhou including You Make Me Happy and Sad (1991), The Flowery Heart (1993), Music Brings Us Together (1994), and Emil & Friends (1997). In 1999, he changed his name to Wakin Chau and continued releasing a series of hit albums including Nepenthes (2001), and Wakin in the Rain (2006). In 2008, he formed Superband, a pop vocal quartet that also included Jonathan Lee, Chang Chen-yue, and Lo Ta-yu. However, the group only lasted two years and split up in 2010. He returned to his solo career and released hit albums including Diva (2011), The Younger Me (2019), and A Song for You (2020). Wakin Chau has also dabbled in acting and has appeared in nearly two dozen films including Osmanthus Alley (1987), Mr. Nice Guy (1997), Gorgeous (1999), and Homerun (2003).
