Biography

Cally Kwong Mei-wan, born on December 24, 1962, in Hong Kong, is a singer who performs in the Cantopop genre. Despite a challenging upbringing, with her mother's untimely death and impoverished conditions, she emerged as a symbol of resilience and ambition. At 19, she gained recognition as the 1st runner-up in the Miss Hong Kong contest of 1982, after which she represented Hong Kong at the 32nd Miss World contest. Her impressive journey in pageantry paved the way for her subsequent ventures, leading to a successful career in the music industry. Her first solo album, Sit for a While, was released in 1985. Her ascent to pop stardom would continue over the following years with the albums Cally (1986), Heartbeat (1989), Love in the World (1990), and Feel (1991). In 1989, she became the Cantonese singing voice for Ariel, the main character in Disney's animated classic The Little Mermaid. Simultaneously, she successfully branched out into the Mandarin market, delivering a string of well-received LPs such as I Really Want to Hold You Tight (1988), You Will Never Understand (1992), and Vulnerable Woman (1993). Even though she took a break from her music career in the early aughts, creating her own jewelry company and even making a foray into politics, Cally Kwong surprised her fans in 2017 with the album C Again, released via Star Entertainment.
