Biography

Lo Ta-You, born on July 20, 1954, in Taipei, Taiwan, is a revered Taiwanese singer-songwriter, musician, and a pioneer in the Mandarin pop music genre. Ta-You began his music career in 1976 and rose to fame with the release of his debut Mandarin-language album Pedantry in 1982. The album’s singles “Lukang, the Little Town,” "Love Song 1980" and "Childhood" quickly became hits thanks to their catchy melodies and socially conscious lyrics. Continuing in this style, Ta-You’s second album, Master of the Future (1983), was a reflection on contemporary events, nationality, and traditional society with lead single, “The Orphan of Asia,” receiving critical acclaim. In 1988, Ta-You released the album Comrade Lover, followed by two albums in 1989, Brilliant Days and The Year to Say Farewell. In the 1990s, Ta-You moved to Hong Kong, where he produced some of his most significant works, particularly Cantonese-language songs “Queen’s Road East” and “Pearl of the Orient” which expressed the mindset of Hong Kong as it faced the handover of sovereignty in 1997. Between 1992 and 2004, Ta-You released seven more albums: Capital 首都, (1992), Love Song 2000 戀曲二〇〇 (1994),再會吧!素蘭 (Zài huì ba! Sù lán (1995), 寶島鹹酸甜(Bǎodǎo xián suān tián) (1996), 昨日遗书 (Zuórì yì shū) (2002), 昨日至今 (Zuórì zhì jīn) (2002), and Beautiful Island 美麗島 (2004). After an extended hiatus, Ta-You released his album Home lll 家 lll in 2017, which was well-received by fans and critics alike. In 2021, Ta-You was recognized for his contribution to Mandarin popular music with the Golden Melody Special Contribution Award and in 2022, released his 18th album Encore. In February 2023, his 1982 hit “Story of Time” re-entered the Chinese charts, once again demonstrating Ta-You’s enduring popularity and impact on the Mandarin pop music genre.
