Biography

An Estonian choral ensemble founded by Jaan-Eik Tulve in 1996, Vox Clamantis performs early Gregorian chant, as well as works by modern and contemporary composers, including their compatriot Arvo Pärt, in the creations Adam's Lament (2012) and The Deer's Cry (2016). In addition to world tours, the choral ensemble hosted by the Estonian Gregorian Association works with the Choeur Grégorien de Paris and collaborates with Estonian composers Helena Tulve, Toivo Tulev, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Tonis Kaumann and Tunisian oud player Dhafer Youssef. His eclectic repertoire includes collaborations with the Weekend Guitar Trio for the medieval recital Stella Matutina (2008), pianist Jean-Claude Pennetier for a Diapason d'or award-winning performance of Franz Liszt's sacred work Via Crucis (2013), and Estonian neo-progressive rock band Pohja Koon in 2019. The Filian Sion recital released in 2012 brings together anonymous choral works, while Sacrum Convivium (2018), includes scores by Maurice Duruflé, Francis Poulenc, Olivier Messiaen and Guillaume de Machaut. In 2020, Vox Clamantis honors the Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962), with the collection The Suspended Harp of Babel, followed in 2023 by the Graduel d'Aliénor de Bretagne on the Mirare label and Music by Henrik Ødegaard, on ECM. In 2025, the ensemble dedicates a fourth volume to Arvo Pärt with And I Heard a Voice.
