Biography

Tõnu Kaljuste is an Estonian conductor known for his work with choral ensembles. He sang in his father’s choirs and graduated from the Tallinn Music High School in 1971, later completing studies at the Tallinn Conservatory and postgraduate work at the Leningrad Conservatory. In 1974, he took over leadership of the Ellerhein Chamber Choir, which he later developed into the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in 1981 with state support. After Estonia’s independence in 1991, Kaljuste gained international recognition through ECM Records recordings, particularly of works by Arvo Pärt, as well as Veljo Tormis and other composers. He won a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance for Arvo Pärt’s Adam’s Lament and received the International Classical Music Award in 2019 for his recording of Arvo Pärt’s symphonic works.
