Biography

The Cambridge Singers were founded in 1981 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, by conductor John Rutter, a former music director of the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge. The ensemble began as a chamber choir composed of former Clare College singers and immediately focused on producing recordings under their own label, Collegium Records. Their early releases included Cambridge Singers A Cappella (1993) and A Banquet of Voices (1994), which established their reputation for polished choral performances. Subsequent albums such as Cambridge Singers Christmas Album (2011) and Eternal Light (2025) expanded their catalogue, while collaborations with the City of London Sinfonia and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra highlighted their versatility. The group has remained active through the 2020s, celebrating 40 years with Celebrating 40 Years (2025) and continuing to record and tour internationally.
