Biography

Valjean Johns, born on November 19, 1934, in Shattuck, Oklahoma, is an American pianist and singer. He studied music at the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1958 and securing a Fulbright scholarship. His breakthrough came in 1962 with the release of "Theme from Ben Casey", a recording of David Raksin's theme song from the TV show Ben Casey, which reached number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. This single was his sole Top 40 hit on the pop chart and marked a significant moment in his career. That same year, he released his debut album, also titled Theme from Ben Casey. In addition to his recording career, he scored the 1969 counterculture thriller The Big Cube, starring Lana Turner. He also toured extensively, performing with notable orchestras such as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra. He passed away on February 10, 2003.
