Biography

USED TO BE A CHILD was a Japanese electronic music charity group formed in 1993 in Tokyo, Japan, in response to the country’s declining birth rate and the Ministry of Health’s Welcome Baby Campaign. The collective, comprising seven members from various established acts, united under the mission of creating a nurturing environment for children. Their breakthrough came with the release of the charity single "Bokuragaumareta Anoshinoyouni" on 19 February 1993, a double‑platinum hit that served as the campaign’s anthem. The single was issued through a joint venture between Fan House, Pony Canyon, and Sony Records and quickly rose to prominence on the Japanese charts, solidifying the group’s place in the national pop‑culture landscape. The project concluded in the mid‑1990s as members returned to their primary careers, leaving behind a legacy of charitable collaboration and a single that remains emblematic of Japan’s 1990s social campaigns. Members are Ryo Asuka, Kazumasa Oda, Carl Smoky Ishii, Koji Tamaki, Hideaki Tokunaga, Mari Hamada, and Junko Yamamoto.
