USED TO BE A CHILD was a Japanese electronic music charity group formed in 1993 in Tokyo, Japan, in response to the countryâs declining birth rate and the Ministry of Healthâs Welcome Baby Campaign. The collective, comprising seven members from various established acts, united under the mission of creating a nurturing environment for children. Their breakthrough came with the release of the charity single "Bokuragaumareta Anoshinoyouni" on 19â¯Februaryâ¯1993, a doubleâplatinum hit that served as the campaignâs anthem. The single was issued through a joint venture between Fan House, Pony Canyon, and Sony Records and quickly rose to prominence on the Japanese charts, solidifying the groupâs place in the national popâculture landscape. The project concluded in the midâ1990s as members returned to their primary careers, leaving behind a legacy of charitable collaboration and a single that remains emblematic of Japanâs 1990s social campaigns. Members are Ryo Asuka, Kazumasa Oda, Carl Smoky Ishii, Koji Tamaki, Hideaki Tokunaga, Mari Hamada, and Junko Yamamoto.
