Fumiya Fujii is a Japanese solo artist who launched his career with The Checkers, one of the country's most successful rock & roll acts during the 1980s. He was born on July 11, 1962, in Kurume, Japan. After performing in a local band as a high school student, he followed his father's lead by taking a job with the Japanese National Railways, ultimately quitting that job in 1983 to join The Checkers. The band enjoyed a decade of commercial success, with Fumiya Fujii serving as The Checkers' lead singer and chief songwriter. Although the band broke up in 1992, he maintained his popularity by launching a solo career with the 1993 single "True Love," which peaked at Number 1 on the Japanese Singles Chart and eventually became one of the best-selling songs in Japanese history. His debut album as a solo artist, Rock'en Roll, was released in 1995, followed by two releases — Tears and Standard — in 1996. Fujii remained similarly prolific during the first two decades of 2000s, often releasing multiple albums per year. Records like 2012's Life is Beautiful, 2016's Otana Rock, and 2019's Fuji Rock all cracked the Top 10 in Japan, and singles like "水色と空色" were similarly successful, with the song reaching Number 13 on the Oricon Singles Chart in 2022.
