Umberto Emilio Bindi was born in Bogliasco, Italy, on 12 May 1932, and became a singer and songwriter after receiving classical training. His first composition, "T'ho perduto", appeared in 1950, but his breakthrough came in 1959 with the single "Arrivederci" (recorded by Don Marino Barreto Jr.), which became the bestâselling Italian single that year. Bindi released his debut album Umberto Bindi e le sue canzoni in 1960, followed by Umberto Bindi in 1961 and Con il passare del tempo in 1972. The 1963 single "Il mio mondo"-coâwritten with Gino Paoli-reached Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks, topped the Australian chart, and entered the US Billboard Top 40. In 1967 he composed "La musica è finita", later performed by Ornella Vanoni and Mina. Bindiâs later albums include Io e il mare in 1976 and Le Voci Della Sera (reâissued 1996). He continued performing into the 1980s and 1990s, though his domestic popularity declined amid social controversies. Umberto Emilio Bindi died in Rome on 23 May 2002 after a cardiac illness; a posthumous tribute was erected in his hometown in 2005. His work remains catalogued in major music databases and celebrated for its influence on Italian pop music.
