Biography
Roy Smeck was an American musician born as Leroy George Alfred Smeck on 6 February 1900 in Reading, Pennsylvania. He achieved professional recognition as the âWizard of the Stringsâ for his proficiency on the banjo, guitar, and ukulele. Smeck began his career in vaudeville and achieved professional recognition for the innovative use of instruments including the octachord and the Vita-Uke. He achieved professional recognition for the short film His Pastimes (1926), which made him a celebrity. He performed at the presidential inaugural ball for Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933) and appeared on television programs including The Ed Sullivan Show. His recording career includes the studio recordings South Seas Serenade (1956), The Haunting Hawaiian Guitar (1960), and I Love to Hear a Banjo (1964). Smeck received a posthumous induction into the National Four-String Banjo Hall of Fame in 2001. Smeck died on 5 April 1994 in New York City.
