Biography

Laura Ana Merello, known as Tita Merello, was born on October 11, 1904, in San Telmo, Buenos Aires, Argentina. She was an Argentine film actress, tango dancer, and singer who began her career in the 1920s, emerging alongside notable female tango singers. Merello's breakthrough came with her debut in the first sound movie produced in Argentina, ¡Tango! (1933). Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, she established herself as a dramatic actress in films like La fuga (1937) and moved to Mexico, earning an Ariel Award for her role in Cinco rostros de mujer (1947). Her period of greatest popularity came in the 1950s with films such as Los isleros (1951), Guacho (1954), and Mercado de abasto (1955). She acted on television and radio until her death on December 24, 2002.
