Biography
Nelson Ackerman Eddy was an American operatic baritone and actor born on June 29, 1901, in Providence, Rhode Island. A crossover star, he began his career in musical theater and won a prestigious competition in 1924 to perform with the Philadelphia Opera Society. Eddy signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1933 and made his film debut in Broadway to Hollywood. He achieved international fame through eight films costarring Jeanette MacDonald, beginning with the 1935 hit Naughty Marietta. Their successful collaboration included Rose-Marie, featuring âSong of the Mountiesâ and âIndian Love Callâ, and the 1937 film Maytime. Eddyâs solo film highlights include Rosalie and The Chocolate Soldier. After leaving the studio in 1942, he starred in the 1943 production Phantom of the Opera and provided voices for the 1946 Disney film Make Mine Music. He subsequently established a successful nightclub act in 1953. Eddy died on March 6, 1967, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage during a performance in Miami Beach.
