The Phoenix Foundation, an indie rock band from Wellington, New Zealand, was formed in 1997 by Conrad Wedde, Samuel Flynn Scott, and Luke Buda. They began recording on a school 4-track and released their debut EP China Cove in 2000 before disbanding shortly afterwards. In 2003, they released their debut album Horse Power, which featured experimental recording techniques and blended elements of alt-folk, psychedelia, electronica, and country. The album was critically acclaimed and nominated for Best Album at both the Aotearoa Music Awards (AMA) and the BNet Awards. Their second studio album, Pegasus, was released in 2005 and marked a shift toward a darker, more cinematic sound. In 2007, Horse Power was released in the United States and received international critical attention. The band continued to release albums, including Buffalo (2010) and Friend Ship (2020).
