Biography

The Kingstonians was a Jamaican rocksteady and reggae vocal group formed in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1966 by Cebert "Jackie" Bernard, his brother Lloyd "Footy" Bernard, and Lloyd Kerr. The trio's breakthrough came with the 1967 single "Winey Winey" (1967), which was produced by J.J. Johnson. Between 1968 and 1970, the group recorded for producer Derrick Harriott, releasing chart-topping singles such as "Singer Man" (1969) and "Sufferer" (1968). In 1970, the band released its sole album, Sufferer (1970), on Trojan Records. The Kingstonians continued to record for producers Leslie Kong and Rupie Edwards before disbanding in the early 1970s. Bernard subsequently pursued a solo career, recording "Economic Crisis" (late 1970s) for Lee "Scratch" Perry under the pseudonym Jack Lord. Bernard died of pneumonia on September 14, 2014, at the age of 66.
