The Barbarians was an American garage rock group from Cape Cod formed in 1964. The band consisted of Victor Moulton, Bruce Benson, Ronnie Enos, and Jerry Causi. Moulton, known as âMoultyâ, lost his left hand in an explosion and used a hook-shaped prosthetic to play the drums. Their early recordings include the single âHey Little Birdâ (1964). The group achieved recognition with the single âAre You a Boy or Are You a Girlâ (1965), which reached number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 62 on the Cash Box chart. The ensemble performed in the film The T.A.M.I. Show (1964). Their discography includes the album The Barbarians (1965) and the single âMoultyâ (1966), the latter featuring members of the group The Band and reaching number 90 on Billboard. The Barbarians became inactive in 1967. The group was mentioned by the Ramones in the song âDo You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio?â (1980).
