Biography
The Gants are an American garage rock band formed in 1964 in Greenwood, Mississippi. The original lineup consisted of Sid Herring on lead vocals and guitar, Johnny Sanders on guitar, Vince Montgomery on bass guitar, and Don Wood on drums. Initially known as the Kingsmen, the band began by playing R&B covers and instrumentals popularized by The Ventures. In 1965, after a name change to The Gants, they released their first single "Road Runner" backed with Herring's original composition "My Baby Don't Care", which was re-released on Liberty Records in September of the same year, reaching number 46 in the US and number 28 in Australia. This led to their debut album Roadrunner. The band opened for more famous acts during vacations but struggled to gain significant chart success due to members' academic commitments. In 1966 and early 1967, they released several singles and two albums, Gants Galore and Gants Again, though none achieved notable chart impact. Despite their lack of hits, The Gants maintained a minor cult status within the garage rock ethos. Posthumously, their song "I Wonder" was included on the 1980 compilation album Pebbles, Volume 8. In 2005, they reunited for performances, but the band's original members have since passed away: Vince Montgomery in January 2001, Don Wood in May 2011, and Johnny Sanders in September 2012.
