Biography

The Hombres were an American garage rock band from Memphis, Tennessee. Formed in 1966, the group consisted of Jerry Lee Masters on bass, Gary Wayne McEwen on guitar, B.B. Cunningham Jr. on lead vocals and electronic organ, and John Will Hunter on drums. The band's breakthrough came with their 1967 single "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)", which peaked at number 12 on the charts. Released on Verve Forecast Records, this song featured a spoken introduction inspired by Red Ingle and His Natural Seven's 1947 recording "Cigareets, Whuskey and Wild, Wild Women". The Hombres' album Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out), recorded in February and August 1967, included notable tracks such as "Am I High" and "Mau Mau Mau". Their signature was featured on compilations like Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era (1972) and later on the soundtrack of Cameron Crowe’s 2005 film Elizabethtown. After their disbandment in 1969, John Will Hunter committed suicide in February 1976, and B.B. Cunningham Jr. was tragically killed on October 14, 2012.
