Biography

Gospel and jazz a cappella sextet Take 6 – originally known as The Gentlemen’s Estates Quartet - formed in Huntsville, Alabama in 1980. The group, whose vocalists also reproduce the sounds of percussion and double bass - has been nominated for over 20 Grammy Awards, winning a total of eight. They’ve also won numerous GMA Dove Awards. Outside of their own releases and tours, they’ve collaborated with artists such as Ray Charles, k.d. Lang, The Manhattan Transfer, Quincy Jones, Don Henley, Joe Sample, Whitney Houston and many others. Take 6 released their Platinum-selling self-titled debut album in 1988, reaching Number 3 in the Billboard Gospel Albums chart and Number 8 on the jazz chart. The album featured one of their signature songs - “If We Ever Needed the Lord Before (We Sure Do Need Him Now)". They continued to release a series of popular albums including 1994’s Join the Band, which eventually went Gold. After releasing eight albums on Warner Alliance and Reprise Records, they set up their own label for their 2006 album Feels Good. They’ve continued to release albums on a variety of labels including Sono, where they’ve released Believe (2016) and Iconic (2018).
