Sylk-E. Fyne is the alias of American female rapper La'Mar Lorraine Johnson (born on July 12, 1978), whose infectious blend of West Coast Rap with R&B topped the charts in the late 90s. Inspired by the gangsta rap boom, Johnson started writing rhymes during her high school years in South Central Los Angeles. After graduating from college, she officially kicked off her music career by joining the shortly-lived all-female hip-hop group G.M.B. (Gangsta Bitch Mentality), who were signed by Eazy-Eâs Ruthless Records. While the trio never made an official release, Johnson made a reputation for herself by ghostwriting for hip-hop legends like Too $hort, Tupac Shakur, and Eazy-E. In 1998, she released Raw Sylk, her studio debut, via RCA Records to great critical and commercial acclaim. The albumâs lead single, âRomeo and Juliet,â took the charts by storm, reaching Number 1 on the Hot Rap Singles chart and obtaining a gold certification shortly after. Despite the singleâs success, the album as a whole didnât do well on the charts and Johnson was eventually dropped from RCA. Expectations were high at this point, and Tha Cum Up (2000) proved to not be up to the task. Despite the albumâs commercial failure, the single âYa Style,â featuring Snoop Dogg and Bizzy Bone, managed to reach Number 17 on the Hot Rap Singles chart.
