Biography
A multi-instrumentalist, Ty Dolla $ign (born Tyrone Griffin, Jr. in 1985) gravitated to the Los Angeles rap scene with YG, for whom he wrote and produced the 2010 track "Toot It and Boot It". While continuing his collaborations with Joe Moses and Young Maestro, he produced his own mixtapes and signed with the Atlantic label, which released the singles "My Cabana" (with Young Jeezy), "Irie" (with Wiz Khalifa) and "Paranoid " (with B.o.B.). His nonchalant rap pop, significant on the Beach House EP (2014), is enhanced by minimalist production, like the track "Blasé", which brings together Rae Sremmurd, Future and foreshadows the debut album Free TC (ranked #14 in 2015), featuring his ally DJ Mustard and a swarm of vocalists (Kendrick Lamar, Babyface, Trey Songz, Kanye West, P. Diddy...). Since Free TC (2015), Ty Dolla Sign has gone from strength to strength, consolidating his status as a hitmaker: in 2016, he released the mixtape Campaign and found himself at the heart of pop with a featuring on Fifth Harmony's "Work from Home". In 2017, he released Beach House 3 and lined up hit singles like "Love U Better", "Ex" and "So Am I". 2018 sees him reach number one in the Hot 100 via "Psycho" with Post Malone and release MihTy, his joint album with Jeremih. In 2019, he returns with "Purple Emoji" with J. Cole, then delivers his Featuring Ty Dolla Sign album in 2020 - buoyed by "Ego Death" (with Kanye West, FKA twigs, Skrillex), "Expensive" (with Nicki Minaj) and "Spicy" (with Post Malone). In 2021, he co-signed with dvsn Cheers to the Best Memories (including "I Believed It" with Mac Miller). After the single "Motion" in 2023, he teamed up with Ye in 2024 for Vultures 1, a US #1, whose "Carnival" topped the Hot 100. In 2025, he presented his documentary Still Free TC at Tribeca and released his new solo album Tycoon, continuing a trajectory that blends R&B, rap and major collaborations.
