Biography

Behind the pseudonym Surgeon lies Anthony Child, a British DJ born in Kislingbury, near Northampton, on May 1, 1971. At the forefront of British techno from the outset, he moved to Birmingham in 1989 and, along with other DJs such as Regis and Female, defined the "Birmingham Sound", crossing Detroit techno with British acid techno. Founder of the Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension labels, he set up the House of God club, where he performed regularly and recorded his first EPs and albums for Downwards Records. Following the releases of Communications (1996) and Hard Education (1997), Surgeon signed to the Tresor label, for whom he produced the albums Basictonalvocabulary (1997) and Balance (1998), followed by Force + Form (1999), all of which were highly acclaimed by critics and fans of minimal and industrial techno. From 2000 to 2020, Dynamic Tension releases Body Request (2000), Breaking the Frame (2011), From Farthest Known Objects (2016) and Luminosity Device (2018). Having become a benchmark for British techno, the DJ with a strong presence on stages the world over returns to the studio for Crash Recoil (2023) and Shell~Wave (2025).
