Starsplash was founded in 2001 as an electronic dance duo and is one of the defining acts of the early 2000s in the hands-up, trance and dance genres. The formation consists of the Dutch DJ Charly Lownoise (born June 17, 1968 in The Hague, Netherlands) and the German producer Franky Tunes. Starsplash combines euphoric melodies, driving beats and catchy synth hooks, with which the duo has attracted widespread attention in clubs, at festivals and in the European dance scene. Charly Lownoise has previously worked as a DJ and producer in the happy-hardcore sector and brings this experience to the project, while Franky Tunes has a significant influence on the dance productions as a producer. The act is representative of the hands-up sound of an entire decade. Starsplash released the single "Wonderful Days 2001" in 2001, which became one of the best-known dance tracks of the new millennium and achieved high chart positions in several countries. Other popular singles followed, such as "Free" and "Cold As Ice" (2005), which conveyed the duo's characteristic dance sound. The records are released on the dance label Kontor Records, including the studio album Back By Popular Demand (2004), which brings together the club tracks of recent years. Starsplash's influence extends beyond the club format into radio shows and DJ sets that shape the European dance mainstream. After the most active phase until around 2005, Starsplash and its members remain present in the electronic scene. Charly Lownoise and Franky Tunes contributed to individual singles and collaborations in the following years, such as "Live as Me" (2020) and other remix projects that document the connection to contemporary EDM styles.
