Biography

The Stamps Quartet is an American gospel group originally founded in 1924 by V. O. Stamps of Upshur County, Texas. After completing his military service, his brother Frank Stamps joined the group. The group's signature song, “Give the World a Smile” (1934), became the first gospel song to sell over one million copies. In 1962, J. D. Sumner and James Blackwood of the Blackwood Brothers Quartet acquired the group's music publishing company and the quartet itself. Sumner joined the group as a bass singer in 1965, assumed its management, and renamed the ensemble J. D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet. The group received a nomination for Male Group of the Year at the second GMA Dove Awards in 1970. From 1971 to 1977, the quartet performed as a regular fixture of Elvis Presley’s concert tours, playing in more than 1,000 concerts. The group's other collaborations include performances with Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Conway Twitty, Jerry Reed, Ronnie McDowell, B. J. Thomas, and Neil Sedaka. From 1995 to 2008, the quartet accompanied the Elvis – The Concert tours, and from 2014 to 2024, the members performed in Elvis – The Musical. In August 2003, Ed Enoch, who joined the band in 1969, acquired the trademark license for the historic Stamps Quartet. The ensemble is the oldest professional gospel quartet in the history of the United States to be active.
