Biography

Squirrel Bait is an American hardcore punk band from Louisville, Kentucky, active from 1983 to 1988. Originally known as Squirrelbait Youth, the trio formed in high school included David Grubbs on guitar and vocals, Clark Johnson on bass, and Rich Schuler on drums. In 1984, Peter Searcy joined as vocalist, and Britt Walford on drums. Three songs from their second demo in 1984 would appear on their debut album. With the addition of Ben Daughtrey on drums and Brian McMahan on guitar, the band toured locally and shared the stage with bands such as Hüsker Dü, Naked Raygun and Big Black. Recommended by the latter, Squirrel Bait signed to Homestead Records, releasing a self-titled EP in 1985, followed by a single in 1986 and an album in 1987, later compiled into a CD. Despite their rise in popularity, artistic tensions and divisions led Grubbs and Johnson to quit high school, culminating in the band's split in 1988. Squirrel Bait remains memorable, however, for having been the starting point for influential members of later bands such as Slint, Bastro, and Gastr del Sol.
