Spineshank was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1996 by bassist and vocalist Jonny Santos, guitarist Marlo Gonzalez, drummer Tommy Decker, and guitarist Mike Sarkisyan. The group initially emerged from the earlier band Basic Enigma and released a demo EP Drunk With Power in 1994, which helped them secure a contract with Roadrunner Records. Their debut studio album Strictly Diesel appeared on 22 September 1998, followed by The Height of Callousness on 10 October 2000; the single "Synthetic" and the track "New Disease" gained exposure on the soundtrack of 3000 Miles to Graceland and in video games such as Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder. In 2003 the band issued SelfâDestructive Pattern, with the single "Smothered" receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 2004. After a lineup change and the departure of Jonny Santos in 2004, the band entered a hiatus before reuniting in 2008 to release Anger Denial Acceptance through Century Media on 19 June 2012. The group disbanded again in 2016, but a brief reunion in 2025 saw them perform at the Louder Than Life festival and record new material, culminating in a scheduled appearance at the 2026 Download Festival. Throughout their career, Spineshank maintained a presence in the nu metal and industrial metal scenes, contributing to compilations such as Best of Spineshank and securing a silver certification for The Height of Callousness in the United Kingdom.
