Biography
Spell Songs is a folk musical ensemble from the United Kingdom. The group, active starting in 2019, was initially assembled to complement The Lost Words, a 2017 book by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. Their debut album, The Lost Words: Spell Songs, was commissioned by the Folk by the Oak Festival and released in July 2019. Following a gathering at Greta Hall in spring 2021, Spell Songs released their second album, Spell Songs II: Let the Light In, which reached number one on the UK Indie Breakers Chart in December of that year. The ensemble includes Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter, Jim Molyneux, and past member Kerry Andrew. Their album, Gifts of Light, was released in 2023.
