Biography

Scottish musician Rachel Newton was born on October  28, 1985, in Edinburgh and began playing harp, fiddle and violin as a child. After studying Folk and Traditional Music at Newcastle University, she formed the trio The Shee in 2005, which released A Different Season (2008) and Decadence (2010) before disbanding in 2011. Rachel Newton’s solo career started with The Shadow Side (2012), nominated for Scots Trad Music Awards Album of the Year. Subsequent releases include Changeling (2014), Here’s My Heart Come Take It (2016), West (2018) and To the Awe (2020), the last long‑listed for the Scottish Album of the Year Award. She collaborated with the Furrow Collective on Wild Hog (2016) and contributed to the Lost Words: Spell Songs (2019) project. Rachel Newton co‑founded the Bit Collective to advance equality in Scottish folk music and has earned awards such as Scots Trad Music Awards Instrumentalist of the Year (2016) and BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominations for Best Group and Best Traditional Track.
