Formed in Liberia in 1965, the Soulful Dynamics was a pop and soul band best known for their 1970 hit single “Mademoiselle Ninette.” Founded by vocalist Emanuel Obedekah, the group also featured Frederik ‘Andy’ Anderson (guitar, vocals), Ernest JG Clinton (guitar, vocals), Manfred ‘Maxi’ Free (guitar), Benjamin ‘Ben’ Mason (drums), Olu Igenuma (keyboards), and Molley Morgan (electric bass, percussion). The group relocated to Hamburg, Germany and were soon in the studio recording a track called “Mademoiselle Ninette,” which became a hit. The single reached Number 1 in the singles charts in West Germany and Switzerland, and Number 2 in Austria. They released their debut album, African Fire, in 1970, which was followed by The Soulful Dynamics in 1971. During this period, the band scored several other hits – “Birdie” (1970), “Saah-Saah-Kumba-Kumba” (1971), and “Coconuts for Congoville” (1972) – but nothing as popular as “Mademoiselle Ninette”. Vocalist Emanuel Obedekah also released several solo singles during this time but remained in the group’s lineup. The Soulful Dynamics continued to release a series of albums – Live Im Studio (1973), Jungle People (1977), and Soulful (1977) – and a series of singles but never regained commercial traction and eventually disappeared from the charts. Different versions of the band have played the nostalgia circuit over the years, but no new recordings have been released since their 1982 single “Did You See My Wife.”
