Sleep, an American stoner/doom metal band from San Jose, California, was formed by guitarist Matt Pike and bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros in June 1990. The band evolved from Asbestosdeath, which included drummer Chris Hakius and guitarist Tom Choi. After releasing two singles as Asbestosdeath, the band recruited Justin Marler on drums and changed their name to Sleep. Their debut album Volume One was released in 1991, followed by the EP Vol 2. The band's breakthrough came with Sleep's Holy Mountain, released in November 16th 1992. After signing with London Records, Sleep began working on their third album, Dopesmoker, but conflicts with the label led to its dissolution in 1998. Post-breakup, Sleep released Jerusalem and the original version of Dopesmoker. In May 2009, Sleep reformed with Jason Roeder replacing Chris Hakius on drums. Their comeback album, The Sciences, was surprise-released in April 20th 2018 to critical acclaim. Sleep followed up with live albums Live at Third Man Records (2019) and New York 2018 (2022).
