Skinny Puppy was a Canadian post-industrial band formed in 1982 in Vancouver, Canada, by cEvin Key and Nivek Ogre. The duo released the debut album Remission (1984) under Nettwerk Records, showcasing an early electro-wave sound. In 1985, Bill Leeb joined the group under the pseudonym Wilhelm Schroeder but left in 1986 to form Front Line Assembly and Delerium. Dwayne Goettel, who had classical keyboard training, replaced Leeb and contributed significantly to the evolving sound. The album Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse (1986) marked a shift toward increasingly complex and industrial-heavy sounds. The 1987 release, Cleanse Fold and Manipulate, was predominantly characterized by keyboards, synthesizers, and MIDI sequences. Skinny Puppy gained attention for bizarreness and controversial live performances and music videos, which frequently addressed themes such as animal rights and environmental pollution. The album VIVIsectVI (1988) featured the song "Testure", which charted on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts in 1989.
