Spoons, a Canadian new wave band formed in Burlington, Ontario in 1979, initially consisted of Gordon Deppe, Sandy Horne, Brett Wickens, and Peter Shepherd. Their first single "After the Institution" was released in 1980. In 1981, Spoons released their debut album Stick Figure Neighbourhood, which gained popularity on Canadian university charts. The band's breakthrough came with the 1982 album Arias & Symphonies, featuring hits like "Nova Heart" and "Smiling in Winter". They were nominated for Most Promising Group of the Year at the Juno Awards in 1983. Their subsequent albums included Talkback (1983), produced by Nile Rodgers, which featured the hit "Old Emotions", and Vertigo Tango (1988).. The band disbanded in 1991 but reunited for various shows and released Unexpected Guest At A Cancelled Party in 2007, followed by Static in Transmission in 2011.
