Biography

English-based electronic music group Electribe 101, active from 1988 to 1992, was formed in Birmingham by Joe Stevens, Les Fleming, Rob Cimarosti, and Brian Nordhoff and fronted by Billie Ray Martin. Martin, born in Hamburg, had moved to Berlin and then London seeking new collaborators and the group formed after responding to his ad in Melody Maker. Their first single "Talking with Myself" was released commercially by Phonogram in November 1988. The group signed with Mercury Records in 1989 and released their debut album Electribal Memories on October 30th, 1990. The album reached number 26 on the UK Chart and included notable singles such as "Tell Me When the Fever Ended" and a reissue of "Talking with Myself", which peaked at number 23 in the UK Singles Chart and number 8 on the US Dance Chart. Despite supporting Depeche Mode on their World Violation Tour in 1990, internal conflicts and label issues led to Electribe 101 being dropped by Phonogram in 1991. The group disbanded soon after, with members continuing under different projects. Billie Ray Martin released exclusive Electribe 101 material in recent years, including the unreleased album Electribal Soul in 2022.
