Shim Soo-bong (real name Shim Min-kyung, born Julyâ¯11â¯1955, in Seosan, Republic of Korea) emerged as a South Korean pop singer whose early life was steeped in traditional music through her father, Sim Jaeâdeok, a folk song collector, and her extended family of performers. After studying at Myongji University, she debuted in 1978 during the MBC College Song Contest with her selfâcomposed "The Man at Then", which earned her immediate media attention and positioned her as a newâstyle trot artist. Her debut album The Man at Then (1979â05â31) solidified her popularity, and she later released Dear My Bride (2013â06â17) and Oldies But Goodies Vol.â¯50 (2000â01â01). Shim's career faced a hiatus after she witnessed the 1979 assassination of President Park Chungâhee, leading to a television ban until 1981 and extended monitoring; she later discussed the event publicly in 2006. Throughout her career she earned accolades such as the 1979 KBS Rookie of the Year, MBC Topâ¯10 Singers of the Year (1979), the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards Hall of Fame Award, and the 2010 Hanteo Awards Album Award for Trot. The track "Million Roses" re-entered Melon's Top 100 K-trot songs MelOn chart at rank 76 in March 2026.
