Biography

Renato Teixeira de Oliveira (May 20, 1945) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter and one of the country's biggest cultural assets. Deeply rooted in the regional genre of sertanejo and folk-rock, his music is also linked to caipira culture, a phenomenon native to rural areas throughout the interior of Brazil. Born in the neighborhood of Santos Sin ão Paulo, he rose to fame in the late 70s with the song "Romaria," which was later covered by Elis Regina in her eponymous 1977 album. Other hits penned by Renato Teixeira include the Gal Costa duet "Dadá Maria" and "Tocando Em Frente," a collaborative effort with Almir Sater that was first recorded by singer Maria Bethânia in 1990. Shortly after its release, the track won Best Song of the Year at the 1991 Sharp Awards and has since attained classic status. In the subsequent years, Renato Teixeira continued to fight for the authenticity of sertanejo and caipira music, publicly rejecting the genre's more commercial-sounding forms with albums like 2010's Amizade Sincera, written in collaboration with fellow singer-songwriter Sérgio Reis. The second installment in the series arrived in 2015 and earned Teixeira his first Latin Grammy, followed by a second one in 2016 for the Almir Sater joint album AR. In 2021, Teixeira and Sater joined forces with Raimundo Fagner for a passionate rendition of "Tocando Em Frente" that climbed to Number 73 on the Brazilian Top 100.
