Biography

Sankomota, originally known as Uhuru, was a group from Lesotho formed in 1976 in Maseru. The band initially consisted of Tsepo Tšola, Frank Moki Leepa, Harebatho "Black Jesus" ’Musa, Moss Nkofe, and Moruti Selate. They gained local fame quickly, performing as the opening act for jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Monk Montgomery. In 1978, most members were arrested by South African authorities, leading to a ban on their performances in the country but increased their popularity in Lesotho. The band renamed themselves Sankomota around 1979 to avoid confusion with the Jamaican reggae group Black Uhuru. Their debut album Sankomota was released in 1983 and featured compositions by Frank Leepa. Subsequent albums include Dreams Do Come True (1987) and After the Storm (1993). The band disbanded around 1993, with members Tšola and Leepa pursuing solo careers. Leepa, Musa, and Tshola passed away in 2003, 2010, and 2021 respectively.
