Félix del Rosario was a Dominican musician, composer, and orchestra leader known for his contributions to merengue, salsa, and Afro-Cubanâinfluenced jazz. He began his musical studies at age 15 and later moved to Santo Domingo, where he joined the Navy Band and rose to the rank of officer. In 1964, he formed the group Félix del Rosario y Sus Magos del Ritmo, which remained a major presence in Dominican popular music for over two decades. Among his notable works are âPapá Bocóâ and âVÃctor y Memelo,â and he explored jazz-influenced styles in compositions such as âCarmen.â Del Rosario also led ensembles including the Santo Domingo All Star and Grupo Félix. He received several honors, including being named âMeritorious Sonâ of his hometown in 1973. He died on October 26, 2012, at the age of 78.
