Edison dos Santos Machado, born on January 31, 1934, was a Brazilian drummer and composer. A self-taught musician, he learned to play drums by observing Brazilian drummers such as Luciano Perrone and Edgar Nunes Rocca. In 1949, at age 17, he accidentally developed the technique known as samba no prato (âsamba on the cymbalâ) when his snare drum broke during a performance. To continue playing, he shifted the rhythm to the ride cymbal with his right hand while adding syncopated accents on a tom with his left, a style that later became his signature. Throughout the 1950s, Edison dos Santos Machado played in various clubs. In 1957, he joined Turma da Gafieira and was part of one of its first albums like Samba Em Hi-Fi. He co-founded Bossa Três in 1961, one of the earliest instrumental bossa nova groups. Notable albums include Edison Machado à Samba Novo (1964). Machado passed away on September 15, 1990.
