Biography

Ruth Wallis was an American cabaret and novelty singer born as Ruth Shirley Wohl on 5 January 1920 in Brooklyn, New York. She achieved professional recognition for a musical style characterized by risqué and satirical lyrics utilizing double entendres. After performing with orchestras led by Isham Jones and Benny Goodman, she established a solo career in the 1940s. Her recording career includes the track “Dear Mr. Godfrey” (1953), which reached number 25 on the charts. She established the label Wallis Original Recordings in 1952. Her discography includes the studio recordings Life of the Party (1950), Rhumba Party (1953), and New Party Favorites (1953). In 1958, she achieved professional recognition for a tour of Australia during which her recordings were seized by customs agents. She became inactive in the 1970s. The musical Boobs! The Musical: The World According to Ruth Wallis (2003) is based on her life and compositions. Wallis died on 22 December 2007 in South Killingly, Connecticut.
