Biography

English folk rock quartet River City People, formed in Liverpool, England, in 1986. The group consisted of vocalist Siobhan Maher, guitarist Tim Speed, his drummer brother Paul Speed, and bassist Dave Snell. Before forming River City People, Siobhan Maher, Tim Speed, and Dave Snell were members of the Liverpool band "Peep Show." In mid-1989, River City People released their debut single "(What's Wrong With) Dreaming?" and appeared on Channel 4's The Chart Show, which led to a signing with EMI. Their first album, Say Something Good, was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Don Gehman. The band achieved notable success with their cover of The Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'" in summer 1990, which reached number 13 as a double A-side with "Carry the Blame". Their subsequent album, This Is the World, was released in late 1991. Despite their chart success, River City People disbanded shortly after. After the group's dissolution, Siobhan Maher collaborated with ex-Bangle Debbi Peterson in the duo Kindred Spirit, releasing a self-titled album in 1995 on I.R.S. Records and later released a solo album Immigrant Flower in 2002. The Speed brothers formed the band Speed after River City People disbanded.
