Biography
The Ukrainians, a British musical band formed in 1990 by Wedding Present guitarist Peter Solowka, is known for playing traditional Ukrainian music with post-punk influences. The group's initial breakthrough came with their first EP Oi Divchino (1991), which was named Single of the Week by NME. Their debut album, The Ukrainians, was released the same year and achieved significant success in Europe, leading to extensive touring. Notable releases include Vorony (1993), which was named "Album Of The Month" in the UK, and Kultura (1994). The band's music often addressed cultural themes, such as their 1996 single "Radioactivity", which benefited victims of the Chernobyl disaster. After a hiatus, they returned with Respublika (2002) and continued touring. Their album Diaspora (2009) explored migration and new beginnings. The Ukrainians released several notable cover albums, including Never Mind The Cossacks Here's The Ukrainians (2014), featuring covers of the Sex Pistols, and A History Of Rock Music In Ukrainian (2015).
