Riley Kelly Lee, born in 1951 in Plainview, Texas, is an American-born Australia-based shakuhachi player and teacher. He began his musical journey playing bass in a rock band at age 13. In 1970, Lee traveled to Japan to study the shakuhachi. From 1973 to 1977, he toured internationally with Ondekoza, performing with notable orchestras and at venues such as the Kennedy Center. After returning to Honolulu in 1978, Lee began teaching privately and founded the Chikuho School of Shakuhachi of Hawaii. He moved to Australia in 1986 to pursue a PhD in ethnomusicology at the University of Sydney. Throughout his career, Lee has released over 50 recordings, many featuring his own compositions, and collaborated with various artists, including harpist Marshall McGuire and the Sydney Dance Company. In 2008, he served as the artistic director for the World Shakuhachi Festival.
