Raymond Carlos Nakai, also known as R. Carlos Nakai, was born on April 16, 1946, in Flagstaff, Arizona, and is an American flutist. Initially playing brass instruments in high school and college, he transitioned to the traditional Native American cedar flute after an accident left him unable to play his trumpet. He released his first album, Changes, in 1983, which led to a contract with Canyon Records. Over the next decades, he recorded more than thirty albums with Canyon Records, including collaborations with musicians such as William Eaton and Philip Glass. Notable releases include Earth Spirit (1987) and Canyon Trilogy (Native American Flute Music) (1989), both certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. His 1995 collaboration with William Eaton, Feather, Stone & Light, topped the New Age albums chart for 13 weeks and was selected as a Billboard Critics' Choice. He received eleven Grammy Award nominations, including one for Ancestral Voices in the Best Traditional Folk Album category in 1993, eight in the Best New Age Album category, and two in the Best Native American Album category.
