Biography
Primary is a hip-hop solo artist, producer, and record label owner from South Korea. Born in Seoul as "Choi Dong-hoon" on January 31, 1983, he studied at Seoul Jazz Academy and began involving himself in the city's hip-hop scene in 2004. After teaming up with fellow South Korean rapper Beenzino for the collaborative album P'Skoolâs Daily Apartment in 2009, he produced Supremier, a Top 10 hit that marked the full-length debut of hip-hop duo Supreme Team. He also focused on his music and began releasing singles from his debut solo effort, Primary and the Messengers, in 2011. The album itself arrived in 2012 and charted at Number 3 in South Korea, with the non-album single "Johnny" (featuring Dynamic Duo) becoming his first Top 40 hit that same year. Primary and the Messengers included its own share of hits, too, with "See Through" and "Clean Entrance" both charting at Number 20 and the record's biggest hit, "?," peaking at Number 3. After releasing the collaborative EP Lucky You! with indie rock singer and Hyukoh frontman Oh Hyuk in March 2015, Primary issued his second solo album, 2, later that summer. The album climbed to Number 7 on the Gaon Music Chart and continued Primary's string of chart successes with seven additional Top 40 hits, including "See You" (which climbed to Number 7) and "Don't Be Shy" (which hit Number 10). During the decade's second half, Primary largely focused on EP releases like 2017's Shininryu and 2018's Do Worry Be Happy. He continued collaborating with other artists, as well, contributing a number of songs â including the radio hit "Crazy" â to the soundtrack of the South Korean TV series D.P. with R&B singer Kevin Oh.
