Biography

American indie rock band formed in Berkeley, California, in 1999, We Are Scientists initially consisted of Keith Murray (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Chris Cain (bass, backing vocals) and Michael Tapper (drums, percussion), replaced after his departure in 2007 by touring member Adam Aaronson until 2009 and then by Andy Burrows until 2014. After their first self-produced demo, Safety, Fun, and Learning (In That Order) in 2002, the band released their first official album, With Love and Squalor, in 2006, which entered the UK charts at number 43. In 2008, its successor Brain Thrust Mastery gave the band its highest UK chart position (#11). Subsequent releases all reach the Top 50: Barbara (#46 in 2010), TV en Français (#36 in 2014), Helter Seltzer (#48 in 2016), then Megaplex (#45 in 2018). In 2019, We Are Scientists share the album Wasabi with the group Art Brut for a Record Store Day release. To kick off their third decade, We Are Scientists returned in 2021 with a new studio album entitled Huffy, which reached No. 32 in the UK. The band then embarks on a festival tour, before delivering the Settled Accounts EP and the Lobes album in 2023. Ten years after its release, the album TV en Français was reissued in a deluxe edition in 2024, before a UK tour devoted to Brain Thrust Mastery, also reissued and played in its entirety. Juggling stage and studio, We Are Scientists unveiled their ninth album Qualifying Miles in July 2025.
