James Kent, known professionally as Perturbator, was born on January 22, 1993, in Paris, France. Son of British music critic Nick Kent and French journalist Laurence Romance, he began his musical journey as a guitarist in various metal bands before transitioning to electronic music. In 2011, at the age of 18, Kent created Perturbator, initially conceptualized as a project producing fake soundtracks for retro exploitation films. His early releases included I Am the Night and Terror 404, both released in 2012. Perturbator's breakthrough came with the release of Dangerous Days in June 2014, followed by notable EPs such as Sexualizer EP and Nocturne City. His subsequent albums, including The Uncanny Valley (May 2016) and Lustful Sacraments (May 2021), solidified his status in the electronic music scene. Perturbator's work is characterized by its darksynth and metal influences, drawing inspiration from 1980s cinema and soundtracks by artists like John Carpenter. In 2025, Perturbator signed with the renowned metal label Nuclear Blast Records and recorded his sixth studio album, Age of Aquarius, released in October that year. The lead single, "Apocalypse Now," features guest vocals by Kristoffer Rygg of Ulver.
